Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini Yoga (as it is taught by Yogi Bhajan) uses familiar Hatha principles to explore what is called 'the science of the Chakras'. Posture (Asana), breathwork (Pranayam), hand position (Mudra), chanting (Mantra), and meditation combine to create a transformational and awakening experience. Kundalini has been defined as a serpent-like energy coiling up the spine that opens the chakras. Only personal experience can truly attempt to define this ancient practice!!
who is yogi bhajan?
Born Harbhajan Singh in northwestern province of Punjab, India, he mastered Kundalini Yoga by the age of 16 under the strict instruction of Sant Hazarah Singh. Known simply as "Yogi Bhajan" he came to the west in the late 1960's with the intention to create teachers of a powerful yoga called Kundalini. He believed this yoga helps people to become happy, healthy, and holy in a quickly changing and often chaotic world. His legacy lives on through the NGO/Non-Profit Organization called 3HO or the Happy, Healthy, Holy Organization and thousands of Kundalini Yoga Teachers across the globe. Yogiji is often quoted saying "See God in All or not at all."
How does it work?
Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan is an energetic style composed of repetitive movements that differ rom those in other styles. Combined with longer meditations and basic Sanskrit chanting, this yoga works directly on the nervous system. The basic tools of the practice include posture, breathwork, meditation, chanting, and deep relaxation. Each class begins and ends with a tuning-in and tuning-out process which surrounds a core practice of asana, breathwork, meditation, and chanting.
Through somatic movement, dynamic breathing, and sound/vibration - the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are challenged to re-direct signals to the brain in an emotionally healthy way. This breaks down past habit-patterns that no longer work and re-inforces patterns that do. In this way, the nervous system grows stronger over time in it's ability to maintain balance in stressful situations. Classes are accessible to all levels and require no previous experience.
